Affirmative action should be based on class, not race, to ensure true equality. Class-based policies address the root cause of disadvantage: economic inequality. Race-based affirmative action often overlooks poor whites and other marginalized groups, perpetuating division. A class-focused approach unites us in tackling poverty, benefiting all disadvantaged students regardless of race. This is the only fair, effective way to level the playing field and uphold the American ideal of meritocracy.
Class-based affirmative action alone ignores the enduring legacy of racism. Systemic inequities continue to plague communities of color. To achieve true equity, we must acknowledge and address both race and class in higher education admissions.
Reducing affirmative action to class alone ignores the persistent racial inequalities that affect Black communities. Structural racism is not eradicated by economic status. The NAACP stands firm: affirmative action must address racial disparities head-on. Erasing race from affirmative action dilutes its purpose and undermines the struggle for true equality. Racial justice requires acknowledging and combating racial discrimination directly, not masking it behind socioeconomic status alone.
The NAACP's obsession with race is outdated. Class, not race, is the primary obstacle for disadvantaged Americans today. Our approach tackles the root cause of inequality, ensuring equal opportunity for all, regardless of skin color.
